What are the Other Names of India

If you consider all the different names given to this country throughout history by different countries and mentioned in religious texts, these are some of them :

1. Jambudvipa – It literally translates to “land of Jambu trees” and is mentioned in various Hindu, Buddhist as well as in Jain texts.

2. Nabhivarsha – This name translates to two different meanings according to two different religious texts. In Jain texts, it means that the country is named after “King Nabhi” who was the father of first Jain Tirthankara Lord Risabh. However, in Hindu texts, nabhi is denoted as “navel of Brahma” and Varsha means “country”.

3. Aryavarta- In classic Sanskrit literature one can find this as the name of India, literally translating to “land of the Aryans”. Although initially, the term was only used to refer the Indo-Gangetic plain, as this was the place, where the Aryans, first settled. The South part of the subcontinent was named as “Dravida”.

4. Bharatvarsha – This is the name given to India after the legendary mythical king, King Bharata who fought the Dasharajan war and emerged as the winner.

5. Bharata – It is simply the abbreviated form of Bharatvarsha. It is one of the official names of the country at present, mentioned in Article 1 of the Constitution of India.

6. Hind – The name was given to us by Persians who probably pronounced “S” as “H”.

7. Hindustan – It is also a Persian name. It was mostly used to denote the land after the Muslim Kings started to rule over the sub-continent.

8. Tianzhu – It is the Chinese historical name for India.

9. Tenjiku – The Japanese called our land by this name.

10. Cheonchuk – Cheonchuk is the historical Korean name of India.
